Dr. LeRoy Allen founded Raleigh Neurosurgical Clinic in 1954. At that time, neurosurgery was still a new field of medicine and many local physicians didn’t think a neurosurgeon was needed in Raleigh (then a town of 40,000) since they were already available at Duke and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. But Dr. Allen was determined to offer neurosurgery in his home town of Raleigh, and founded the clinic to better serve local residents after completing his neurosurgical training at the University of Virginia under Dr. Walter Crutchfield.
In more than 60 years, Raleigh Neurosurgical Clinic has experienced some changes, but it remains dedicated to providing the highest quality of care for patients. Dr. LeRoy Allen’s son, Dr. Robert Allen, followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the practice in 1985. When his father decided to retire from neurosurgery in 1993 after nearly 40 years in practice and just before his 70th birthday, Dr. Robert Allen took over Raleigh Neurosurgical Clinic. In 2002, Dr. Russell Margraf joined Dr. Allen to expand the services offered at the clinic. Dr. LeRoy Allen passed away in 2012.
In October of 2013, Raleigh Neurosurgical Clinic merged with Capital Neurosurgery to become Raleigh Neurosurgical Clinic Inc. This merge brought the two oldest neurosurgery practices in Wake County together in order to more effectively treat local patients in need of their services.
Dr. Ken Rich founded Capital Neurosurgery Inc in 1986 and was joined by Dr. Tim Garner in 1989. Though separate entities, Drs. Rich and Garner worked very closely with the neurosurgeons at Raleigh Neurosurgical Clinic throughout their careers, and Dr. Garner had even worked in the operating room at Rex Hospital with Dr. LeRoy Allen while growing up in Raleigh.
Today, Dr. Robert Allen and his partners Dr. Rich, Dr. Garner and Dr. Margraf serve the greater Raleigh, NC community with the highest quality neurosurgical care available. Following the merger, the four neurosurgeons have more than 90 years of experience, and Raleigh Neurosurgical Clinic Inc has grown to become the primary leader in neurosurgery in central North Carolina and one of the largest private neurosurgical group practices in the area.
